This paper presents a non-traditional approach for open pit mine valuation problem.

The methodology envisaged in this study brings the concept of incorporating ore

grade modeling uncertainty into the design of open pit mine and its valuation, which is

otherwise often ignored in traditional mining practices. The proposed strategy relies on

the utility of the conditional simulation technique to incorporate the property of grade

modeling uncertainty, which is subsequently imparted in the valuation of an open pit

mine through the generation of different pits based on the grade values of individual

simulated maps. Following the above approach, it is possible to reproduce a set of pit

values of a single deposit, which will eventually help the mine management to measure

the risk associated with an open pit valuation. The quantification of pit value and the

associated risk will assist the mine management in appropriate decision making about

whether a particular open pit project will be profitable proposition. The methodology

was investigated in an open pit iron ore deposit for the valuation of the deposit. Several

pertinent exercises including histogram and variogram plots, generation of conditional

simulated ore grade maps, transformation of ore grade maps to economic block maps,

creation of ultimate pit using Lerchs and Grossman algorithm, and risk analysis were

carried out in details for the deposit.
