Today, mining operations in North America are continually striving for process improvement

to stay competitive with market rivals. With a limited supply of equipment resources

given high costs to purchase and operate, it is essential to allocate these resources

in the most efficient manner possible. The computer programming language

GPSS/H was used to develop a model to simulate the mine development process at a

surface bentonite mine near Greybull, Wyoming. By specifying which equipment is to

be used in various earth moving stages, simulated production rates, efficiencies, and

days to mine can be used to evaluate between various, user-defined resource allocation

scenarios. Data were collected from time studies and production records for six scrapers

and three dozers at the mine. Statistical cycle time distributions were fit to historical

and observed occurrences. Delay times, standby times, down times, and rehandle

data were collected from production records and observed occurrences. Comparison

of simulated results with actual pit development showed that the percent difference between

simulated and actual total production was less than 2.3%.
