A methodology to quantify the value of quality performance in the lateral development

cycle using process simulation is presented. This addresses the need of mining companies

to increase actual lateral development rates for single headings using drilling and

blasting techniques. The rate of advance of the development will influence the time required

to reach the orebody and, as a result, key economic parameters of the whole project.

Quality assurance of the particular components of the development cycle becomes

instrumental in achieving high rate of advance in a lateral development process. The development

practices at hard rock mines of Falconbridge Ltd. and Boliden AB, in Canada

and Sweden respectively, are captured and simulated using discrete event simulation.

The practices are analyzed to identify quality issues, as they relate to cost, speed,

and overall performance. The activities involved in each practice are modeled in detail

and the process parameters are analyzed in terms of rate of development, cost and

process performance quantification using statistical analyses. The process performance

in each activity is evaluated using indices, while Pareto analysis is applied for prioritization

of components causing process delays. It is found that, overall, the Boliden practice

has better quality performance than the Falconbridge practice.
