BROWSE_DETAIL_TAB_ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is to find out and analyse the function andsignificance of style in fantasy literature in general, how style is recreated in thetarget text, and the translation strategies used in this recreation especially in the caseof the Turkish translations of Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy through apolysystemic approach. In this dissertation, the position of fantasy literature inTurkish literary polysystem is investigated within the scope of Even-Zohar’spolysystem theory in order to present the role of the literary polysystem indetermining the transfer of style. In the light of the data gathered, it is concluded thatfantasy literature the adventure of which in Turkish translated literature has begun in1994 has a secondary position in Turkish translated literature polysystem. Afterdetermining the position of fantasy genre in Turkish translated literature, examplesselected from Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy in terms of style are analysedboth in terms of source text and target text. At the end of this study, it is found thatthe translator prefers to use the best ready-made secondary models as translationstrategies which leads to a “non-adequate translation” as Even-Zohar states in hispolysystem theory.Since Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory provides a systemic and a culturalanalysis method rather than a textual analysis, stylistic aspects of the original workwhich contain unique linguistic features and figurative language such as metaphor, alliteration, their functions in the source text and significance in terms of sourceculture and source text readers are analysed with a view to Raymond Van denBroeck’s method of translation criticism and the Turkish translation of the sourcetexts will be analysed employing the same method to portray if style is recreated andstylistic equivalence is achieved.
