The essay begins by giving a summary definition of the widely accepted definitions of “literature” to be found in dictionaries and literature text-books and questions the validity of such definitions. All sides of the question, now problematized are further discussed through and argument points supported by the views of three major scholars of Anglo-American literature, namely, Terry Eagleton, David Lodge and J. Hillis Miller.Terry Eagleton in his book Literary Theory (1983) argues on similar grounds; he insists that there is no such thing as a commonly agreed upon, all inclusive definition of literature and that there is no such category as “literature” to begin with. David Lodge in his Modes of Modern Writing(1977) begins by agreeing with some scholars’ definition of “literature” as an open-ended category, but disagrees with their view which claims that for a text to be considered as literature, it should be read as literature by audiences. He instead claims that for a text to be “literature”, the text itself must insist an being read as literature through its formal and other qualities. J. Hillis Miller in his book “On Literature” (2002) is more concerned with the claims that “literature” as we know, has finally reached an end, due to the developments in media technology. He defines literature as a “feature of any human culture” and claims that literature will forever be, though in different ways, for its power lies in language, in the power of words to create imaginary worlds and speak to the imagination through words. The essay ends by accepting the views which claim that all aesthetic and artistic standards and values at all times are ideological and accordingly open to change since “taste” changes. . No matter through which set of aesthetic values a text may speak what makes texts “literary” argues the essay are the many ways in which they touch life and look at life with fresh eyes.
