Özet

TUĞCU, Bülent. A Critique of Modern Citizenship: Feminist Citizenship Theory, M.SC. Thesis, Ankara, 2019.The concept of citizenship is one of the most important elements of today'spolitical thought. The understanding of citizenship from ancient times to today hasundergone some changes over time and has become today. However, it should not beoverlooked that ”woman“ seems to have been kept out of this definition. The notionof equality, which is one of the cornerstones of modern citizenship theories, is not soegalitarian when it comes to women. How equal rights of women during this changein citizenship has made them equal citizenship? It is not possible to give a positiveanswer to this question when there is a social and political structure under the malerule in the whole world. In this study, within the framework of modern citizenship theories, theconcept of equal citizenship in feminist currents and world constitutions will beexamined. The study also includes a feminism-based critique of how the concept ofequality is defined. In the first part of the study; the historical and conceptualframework of citizenship and the changes that citizenship has undergone in thishistorical process. In the second part of the study, the definition of feminism andfeminism currents will be emphasized. In the third and last part of the study, thefeminist and masculine theory of citizenship will be focused on and the place ofwomen in constitutions which are in force in world countries and a feminism-basedexamination of modern citizenship theories will take place.
